Žuta

Žuta embodies Jacky’s interpretation of a typeface inspired by the Valachian culture in the year 2023. It serves as a tribute to the Vlaški culture, which relies on oral traditions due to the absence of a written language. The Vlasi are an ethnic and linguistic minority group found in various Balkan countries and have a long, deeply rooted history in the Balkans.

During the process, Jacky tried different directions and ideas and came up with different methods to test them. She used an embroidery machine to test shapes and also did some cross stitching herself. Quick drawing and fast digitizations enabled her to evaluate whether or not she was heading in the right direction throughout the process.

The typeface Žuta consists of two text styles and two display styles as well as an embroidery style which is inspired by the embroidery found on the clothing of the Vlasi people. The word Žuta means yellow in Serbian which is a commonly used color for Vlasi.
