Rituell

Benjamin Rein Gaupset

A warm-hearted designer from the cold heart of Norway who lives in Oslo. He’s interested in type as software, cultural artifact and as visual manifestation of language. Since his BA of graphic design he has worked as a designer with a particular focus on visual identities and digital products. He currently works at Kurppa Hosk in Oslo designing typefaces and visual identities.

Rituell

Rituell is a typeface that’s not quite an interface typeface. Born out of a wish to create an interface typeface that questions certain conventions of style, the idea became to design something for a DIY mini computer that you can create your own little nuggets of information that can be displayed on a Pimoroni Inky 7.3" E-ink Display. E-ink screens have the particular quality of being flexible yet able to blend in to a physical space unlike other screens, due to their paper-like quality. The process of finding the style of Rituell came out of explorative drawing coupled with real-life tests at scale on the product for which the typeface was drawn. The result is a typeface inspired by the visual language of typewriters and the clarendon-style typefaces that were popular at the same time.
